It’s not that easy being a barman... Try to imagine
yourself serving all kinds of person ‒ from that exigent madam till that drunk
boring guy‒ Also, these people still want to call the barman using all kind of
names. That’s how it sounds to be a barman.
On the other hand there are still those who call the barman
as a friend. They call him Mesquita, fellow, buddy, pal. The poor man may be in
one of his worst nights, but he’ll serve his “buddy” with a Colgate smile in
his face and he will try to be nice with the client.
There are also those who like to use onomatopoeias. They
call him “hey”, “psh”, “ooh” or just snap. And the barman ‒ the same smiling guy
- has to serve these people that don’t want at least to use a name for calling
him.
Next table there is that man that, besides of all
other ways, wants to recognize Mr. Mesquita’s qualities. The barman is now “partner”,
“good man”, “old man” and, sometimes, “nigga”. But in this last case, Mesquita
would get very angry, even if he’s actually a nigger guy.
Finally, there is Mr.
Esmeraldino, current-client, sitting always in the same table... This man calls
him using his real name, Rubens. They sit down, talk like old friends [not like
that man in the beginning that drank and drove.], they talk about life things
till 3 a.m., when Rubens is already using noises to communicate. But there is
no time for hang over. Tomorrow Mr. Mesquita has to wake up early, to work as
the manager of a store, because in the bar, he just does it for fun.
